Thoughts on Favre’s Retirement Saga

Posted by jannelle on July 12, 2008

You know, when I heard the whispers about Brett Favre mulling a return to the Packers and the NFL, I thought: “This is nothing. Having an ‘itch’ or ‘urge’ to return is what all retired players go through. Brett will get over it”

Well, that was until I saw the headlines of “Brett Favre Returns”, “Favre wants release from the Packers” from various news sources. The only thing I have to say now is Favre should sit his ass down and stay retired. Granted, Favre still can play.  During 2007 season Favre

- Ranked Sixth in the League in passer ratings

-Finished fourth in passing yards and completion percentage

-Led the Packers to a 14-4 record.

However while last season’s accomplishments and the fact this he is considered to be one of the most beloved players in the history of the NFL and probably the most beloved Packer ever, that is not the point right now. The point here is this: Brett should have seriously thought about his desire to play before he made a decision to retire in March instead of stringing the Packers along after the fact.  According to Fox Sports Jay Glazer, Favre’s indecisiveness stared almost immediately after he announced his retirement.

In the article “Sources: Favre flipped-flopped before draft” (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/8335678?MSNHPHMA), we now know why the Packers refused to grant Favre a release. According to the article, Favre

-informed Green Bay that he wanted to return in late March. He told coach Mike McCarthy and GM Ted Thompson that he had something left in the tank.

-The Packers front office even flew to Mississippi to officialize a deal for Favre to return but in a role to make Aaron Rodger’s situation easier.

-The move was set until Brett informed McCarthy that he was going to remain retired.

Three months after the Packers drafted two QB’s to back Rodgers, Favre told the team that he’s ‘itching’ to play.  Now, the Packers are basically saying “Brett, you know there are creams for whatever itch that you may have. We are backing Aaron Rodgers.” I don’t blame the Green Bay Packers for taking this stance because Favre was the one playing all sorts of trifling and pitiful games with the organization. Honestly  Favre’s been toying with the Packers for nearly three years after every season.

It’s unfair for Aaron Rodgers, a man who paced the sidelines for three years to acquiese once again to #4. It is unfair for Rodgers to once again play backup to a man who refused to help him. I really wish that Rodgers would show some balls and speak up for himself to the Packers and against Favre. By doing this, he’ll probably earn the respect of the front office, the locker room, and *gasp* some fans! Hey, nearly anything is possible.

Pending Comissioner Goodell’s approval for reenstatement, there are only three options that the Packers can make here if they won’t release Favre. They can:

-Keep him and push Rodgers to the side

-Keep him as a backup (Talk about payback, lol)

-Trade Him.

If the Packers can’t or wont take him back or trade him, that just leaves Brett with one option, the sanest option. STAY RETIRED

Retirement is the best bet because for the sake of aruguement, lets just say that Favre winds up on another team. What if Favre can’t get it done for the other team? I tell you what will happen. Favre’s legacy will really be ruined and the media will get all up in his ass for this lastest stunt and play poorly.

SPYGATE: THE TRUTH

Posted by jannelle on February 17, 2008

Like I said in my previous post, the reason why this “Spygate” controversy is bigger than what it was in week one has little to do with football. This all boils down to politics and revenge.  This is how I see things:

In my opinion, Senator (and Philadelphia Eagles Season ticket holder) Arlean Specter does not really care much about the league destroying the Patriots’ tapes, this issue goes beyond that.  The investigation is really about the league’s antitrust exemption, an issue that Specter have been rallying against for years.  The antitrust matter is pressing for Senator Specter becuase he accepted $153,600 in campaign contributions from Comcast Cable and its affiliates, and Specter promiced that he will support legislating ending the NFL’s Anti-trust exemption.

Currently, Comcast cable is in a nasty dispute with the NFL over a deal concerning the NFL network. If the exemption is lifted, networks like Comcast would benefit because the teams will have the opportunity to negoiate their own cable deals. It seems as if the Eagles would chose Comcast because the cable company is a sponsor of the team.  Since the Anti-trust is still standing, Comcast is losing out on some serious dough.

This isnt the first time that Spector butted his nose into NFL business. He sought to have his beloved Eagles and the league investigated for anti-trust violations over their handling of T.O. three years ago.

In the spygate drama, Spector found another way to stick it to the NFL.  He jumped on the bash the Patriots bandwagon. He had motive  to do so because his Eagles lost Super Bowl XXXIX. He is betting on the Patriots to go down so the Eagles could somehow benefit from this scandal. Most important, Spector sees this spygate mess as his best opportunity to end the Anti-Trust exemption and clown the league.

Nothing will warm the cockles of Senator Spector’s heart more than to see the NFL and Roger Goodell embarrased and clowned, believe that!

STUNNER: GIANTS UPSET PATS!

The New York Giants shocked the world last night when they  beat the New England Patriots 17-14 in Super Bowl XLII.  Saying that the Giants played one hell of a game is an understatement.  Eli Manning played nearly flawless and controlled football. New York’s D applied the pressure to Brady and sacked him 5 times. The win was well deserved.

Now, I am not a fan of New England and I was hoping that they would have gotten beat sooner, but I have to take my hat off to them for the regular season they had.   I was actually rooting for them  for two reasons. A) I have a bias for AFC Teams B) I got into it with my on again off again over this game.

For years, I always thought  that the AFC is the toughest confrence to play and  win in and I still do. Watching those teams in that confrence is what makes the game exciting in my opinion. Even the weakest teams are tough. Tonights loss by New England does not change the way I feel about the AFC!

Sadly, I could not enjoy NE getting their big because of reason B! Now the Red Zone isnt the place for my personal shit but I will make an exception today. My on and off again is a Giants fan. I favored New England for that very reason because I’m my own woman and he couldn’t stand me with an opposing opinion. He would call me bitter, hostile, a hater when it isnt even like that! I guess he didnt get the memo that people disagree sometimes and Just because you have an opposing view regrardless of the strength of that view, it doesnt make you bitter or a ‘hater’. Yeah I talked shit! No different than what  other football fans do!

Unfortunately Brady, Moss, AD, and Rodney couldn’t bail me out! So, before I could say congrats, here he come, yapping, and yapping and yapping some more. So things got heated.  He wanted me to apoligize for running down his team.  I said I wasn’t apologizing for anything!  I dont grovel or back down!  So we went at it!

So congratulations to the Giants and all of their fans except for one!

Damn Tiki

Posted by jannelle on January 26, 2008

After the Giants clinched the NFC Championship last week, I’m pretty sure that Tiki Barber felt sick to his stomach. After Barber ran down his team, his quarterback and his coach, the Giants turned this around, played their hearts out and made Super Bowl XLII. It had to hurt Barber to know that the team did it without him.

Tiki retired at the end of last season to go to NBC, and released a book. It didnt take no time for him to criticize his former team.  Tiki did this to prove himself to the rest of the Football Night in America crew and he ran down Tom Coughlin to sell his autobiography.

After the dust settled, the Giants won again. While Barber is artuiculate and knowledgable, he hasn’t really generated the kind of appeal that Keyshawn has at ESPN. Meanwhile, Coach Couglin changed some of his catankerous demeneor, and now the players love him and playing thier asses off for him. Eli Manning is finally coming into his own,and playing  flawless football for the most part. Manning actually had no interceptions in the game against Green Bay.

Tiki is on the outside looking in and wondering what could have been.  Now, I respect Barber for having other interests and pursuing. However, my problem with Tiki is this:  he didnt tell the whole truth when he first retired.

At first, it was about retiring before getting all banged up. Later, he said that Tom Coughlin took the love of the game away. Why didn’t Barber say that about Tom in the beginning of retirement talks?  My other problem with Tiki is apparently, he didnt have the guts to criticize Eli Manning when the two were in the huddle.

So, not only did the Giants beat Tampa, Dallas, and Green Bay, they also beat their former running back.

T.O. : A Snotty, Crying Shame!

Posted by jannelle on January 14, 2008

T.O. , spare us the dramatics, You don’t give a damn about Tony Romo! Those tears were not for him. They were for YOU! Yesterday’s antics by Owens were only so he wouldn’t get blamed for the loss.  If the tears wasn’t bad enough, this dude here said that he had great relationships with his teammates and quarterbacks throughout his career. Now everyone knows that is lie. Let’s run it down shall we!

T.O.

-Implied that Jeff Garcia was gay

-Ran down Donovan McNabb in Philly

-Implied that if he had Favre under center in the Super Bowl, he would have a ring.

Yeah, I know that TO invited Romo to his birthday party and they are seen together on the sidelines but that doesn’t mean that there is a strong bond. Hell, TO worked out endlessly with McNabb when he first arrived in Philly and we know how that relationship ended.

Folks can say whatever they feel about Randy Moss but he took a huge paycut to be with New England because he wants to win. Moss handled his business during his first year with the pats. While TO had some great games with Dallas, he manages to get in distraction after distraction. Now, the media do come down hard on him at times but this time, TO deserves every barb he gets.

Instead of getting the popcorn ready, how about some kleenex , Midol, and a little bit of Carl Thomas.

Giants Win, Romo Chokes!

Posted by jannelle on January 14, 2008

I’m just gonna say what needs to be said here. The Dallas Cowboys deserved to lose yesterday’s game plain and simple. There were senseless penalities, dropped passes, and piss poor special teams play on the part of the Cowboys. The Giants’ D brought the pressure and Dallas’ offense failed to make adjustments.

Romo once again caved in to the Playoff pressure and it was his own dumb ass fault. Instead of galavanting with Jessica Simpson and Jason Witten in Mexico, he should have spent more time with his playbook. Before anyone come here and say “Well, Romo wasnt the only one not studying the book or film.” “Brady didnt spend his bye week studying. He was in New York.” “Others have done worse on their bye week.” Let me say this:  Tom Brady was pretty much flawless vs Jacksonville. In New York, surely he spent some time studying the book or I don’t know, maybe he went to practice too. In Green Bay, Favre, Grant and the rest of the Pack prepared, went out and kicked Seattle’s ass. What I’m saying is this: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A BYE WEEK!

Jerry Jones had $67 millon reasons to advance to the NFC Championship but he ended up wasting his money. Jones watched his investment take two sacks outside of the box without throwing the ball away.  Jones also watched Romo throw that pick in the end zone.

Hey Cowboy fans, I heard that the NY Post planted a Simpson lookalike at the game. Tell me, that it had nothing to do with the outcome? Romo can’t be that dense can he? If Tony is indeed distracted by a “clone” of his ‘girlfriend’, his ass should be on the sidelines making a little bit above the league minimum and rockin the latest in officially licensed gear!

The bottom line is this:  After signing a huge contract like Romo did, there are no more excusses. No more faux passes!  Do whatever you do outside of the stadium. But on the field , just do your damn job- make the throws, make the adjustments and manage a game.

The receivers and defese should go back to some fundamentals and get some disipline.

As for for TO, I have somethin on that in the next entry.

Packers Demolish ‘Hawks

Posted by jannelle on January 13, 2008

Ryangrant

As long as the Packers have Ryan Grant in the backfield, I will never  again write them off as a one dimensional team.  After those two fumbles early on, Grant redeemed himself with 201 yards and 3 touchdowns as the Packers destroyed Seattle 42-20.  On Sunday, I made a boneheaded prediction.  I said that the Seahawks would win beause of their defense. I said that Bobby Engram was gonna cut up the Packs’ secondary. What the hell was I thinking? After that touchdown, it was a wrap for him.

But back to Grant. He set franchise records in playoff games for rushing and  rushing touchdows-eclipsing Ahman Greens mark of 156 yds on the ground. This was also Grant’s sixth 100 yard game of the season. The scary thing about this is he only started 7 games this year. Imagine his numbers if he started for the full season? I feel hella  foolish for doubting this guy but imagine how the Giants feel.

New York did not do a thing with Ryan but trade him, Now, he has thrived in Green Bay. I know Jerry Reece is kicking his own ass for letting this guy go.

As far as the Hawks are concerned, they were exposed as fradulent.  Their defense was MIA and the offense was nonexistent. Shaun Alexander had 20 yards on the ground.  Engram only had 67 yds.  Saying that I have overestimated Seattle, is a gross understatement.

Well, I have said my piece about this game. I’m not gonna grovel for you. Hell, I’m bending my back as it is! That was horrible prediction on my part, and that’s all I have to say.

Jerry Rice Vs. Randy Moss Vs. The Media

Posted by jannelle on January 4, 2008

Photo from NFL.com

” I don’t think breaking Jerry Rice’s record was special. Shutting you guys up (NFL MEDIA) made it special.” -Randy Moss after beating the Giants in the Season Finale.

When I heard that statement, and after cracking up over it, I knew that a ’feud’ would be on the horizon.  Today, I was right because Jerry  said that Moss’ statement was a “slap in the face and added “That’s Moss”

On Mike and Mike in the Morning, Sean Salisbury and Mike Greenburg questioned his statement and the guys from Around The Horn discussed the statement with Woody Paige and two others siding with Moss.

Well, my take on this statement is this: Moss’ problem is not with Rice but with the mainstrem NFL media.  Check this out, Moss have been a target of these guys ever since he came into the league.  Weeks before the ‘98 draft, they talked about his fight in high school and his dismissal from Florida State. During his career, they didn’t talk much about the good things he done in Minnesota.  Instead, they talked about the incident with Minneapolis police, the ‘mooning’ incident, and walking off of the field before the game is over. In Oakland, he had one 1,000 yard receiving season before the Raiders really began to errode.

When Moss was traded on draft day to New England, the media thought the he would be locker room poison to the team. The media thought that he and Brady would not get along. Seventeen weeks later, the joke was on the mainstream NFL media. Randy Moss finished the year with 98 receptions, 1,493 yards, a record setting 23 receiving touchdowns and 0 distractions and disturbances.

After the Giants’ game, the same guys bashing  were the same guys  kissing his ass! Obviously, Moss remembered all of the negativity and the things they said about him. That was when and why  he said what he said. After sucking up to Tom Brady and Bill Bellichick, the media thought about what Moss said, got mad and talked about it today.  Most of these guys have been reporters since Rice was in his prime, and they knew how he was or even is to this day!

Most of these mainstream media knew about Rice and his competive nature and his epidsodes where he feels like he’s been disrespected. The media also know that Rice is trying to extend his celebrity beyond the gridiron.  Rice’s response was not suprising at all nor was his hint that he set the record in the midst of a player strike, and  the implication that Moss’ record should have an astrick.

This is how I see it!  Rice is bitter and salty because A) He lost one of his many NFL records. B) He lost it to someone like Randy Moss and C) Randy didn’t show Rice the respect that he feels entitled to.

My first memory of football was as an eight year old little girl watching Super Bowl XXIV. I was in front of the screen and I  took notice of a man wearing a white jersey with the number 80 on it in bold, scarlet red print, running pattern after pattern and catching touchdowns and passes. I have been a fan of that man, his team at the time, and the game of football since.

As I grew older, and didn’t cheer for the Niners much anymore, I still list Jerry Rice as my favorite football player of all time.

Now, when it comes to Saturday’s incident and Jerry’s reponse, I have to draw the flag. I call B.S. on what Jerry implied before Randy broke the record and after he broke the record because although he  publicly said that he would congratulate Moss, deep down, he didn’t want him to break the record.  If Marvin Harrison broke the record, Rice wouldn’t have a problem with it because Marvin reminds Jerry of himself and Moss is seen as the epitome of what Jerry supposenly despises-flash (despite the fact Rice dipped his hair in Duke and Care Free Curl (fifi hairstyle)  and danced in the end zone himself), controversy and distractions (despite the fact that Rice raised hell when he didn’t get the ball and felt slighted when reporters didnt give him credit), atagonistic relationship with the press and being moody (yeah, Jerry  had that going  too.)

When Moss was on the verge of breaking the record, Rice implied that an astrick should be on #23 because it took Randy 16 games while it took Rice 12 games in strike riddled 1987. He could not say, ‘Well, records fall.  Whatever.’ his competitiveness and pride would not let him.

After the press confrence, Rice was mad and saw Moss’ comments as a diss when it wasn’t even about Rice. Moss’ diss was for the MEDIA. Isn’t it funny that Jerry implied that breaking Moss’ record wasn’t special because he didn’t do it in 12 games and got mad because Randy thought the the actual breaking of the record wasn’t special? Imagine that.

Moss isn’t guiltless either. He should have known to watch what the hell he say. Moss know what the media thinks about him, and he shouldn’t have given them a reason to spout more negativity and tarnish a phenomenal regular season. Now, the media is mad because they felt insulted and it’s time for payback.

The mainstream sports media are a funny group of men (the women don’t act like this). You guys were dogging Randy Moss from day one! You dogged him in Minnesota and Oakland.  You labled him as a ‘locker room poison’. You brought up the police incident. You thought that he would ruin the Patriots and the ‘golden boy’.  What you dont see in Randy in his blowups in Minny and Oakland, his drive to win. He wants to win games and during the later years in Minny and Oakland, he wasn’t doing that.

Aside from that parking incident, did you see him ‘making it rain’? did you hear about him crashing Lamboghinis, carrying more weapons than the army, and causing some serious legal drama off the field? NO you haven’t!

Now that he’s doing good and everything is cool, you all want to act like he’s such a great guy, a leader , a professional, and all these great things, and now you expect him to forgive you all? You have a lot of nerve. So, I don’t blame Randy Moss for saying what he said.

When it comes to Flash 80, you media guys are even worse. Despite revering him and his accomplishments, you never really cared for him because he didnt handle you in the way you liked. In his later years in San Francisco and his stops in Oakland, and Seattle, year after year, you told him to retire because he was ‘tarnishing the legacy’, while you prased Brett Farve for his ‘longevity’.  You dissed Rice for being so focused on the game and not being marketable. When Rice decided to come out of his shell and appear on ‘Dancing With the Stars’, ‘Deal or No Deal, ‘The Class’, ‘The Game’, and ‘Sirus Satellite Radio’ and for the Bay Area ,’ Toyota Sports Sunday’ you accused him of not wanting to let go of the spotlight.

Now, you wanna act like you always liked Rice-pouring on extra admiration, honor, and respect for the way he changed the wide receiver position. You know, spare me the lies and B.S. ! You never gave a good kitty about Jerry Rice , allright! You are giving him extra credit because you can’t stand Randy Moss! For all I know, you probably talk trash behind his back about him being in an anchor’s chair and on satellite radio with his thick Mississippi accent. You were the same way with Muhammad Ali back in day. You hated him in his prime. Now, he beloved because he reminds you of how boxing used to be. It is the same thing with Rice. You thought he was a primadonna and a diva in his prime. Now, he  is a great guy because you think that the new generaton of wide receivers are 10x’s worse than what Rice was. You sportscasters and analysts are about as transparent as glass!

In this match up, noone wins. Jerry Rice should acknowlege and accept the fact that Randy Moss got the single season TD record fair and square regardless of  the number of games it took. Randy Moss should realize that he is still under scrutiny and should learn what to say. The mainsteam sports media should stop playing games and start doing their jobs without fawning, drooling and stanning!

OWNED!: Don’t Talk Trash If You Can’t Back It Up, Anthony!

Posted by jannelle on December 12, 2007

Photos from NFL.com

“It was said. It was documented and it was printed.” “We wanted it more!” -Randy Moss

“We played against a lot better safeties than him.” -Bill Belichick on Disgraced Steelers’ safety Anthony Smith

Wee took the guarantee as a challenge.” -Jabar Gaffney

I know I am late with this but after reading Pittsburgh calling out New England for trash talking three days after their game in Foxboro, it has to be said.

We saw it!

We saw the low latteral gizmo play.

We saw Tom Brady, who has the flavor of a rice cake, talking trash to Anthony Smith while throwing for 399 yards and four touchdowns on 32 completed passes.

We saw Randy Moss torching Smith on two deep scoring drives.

We saw the Patriots humiliate the Steelers 34-13

Now, the Steelers are whining about how ‘classless’ the Patriots are and how they were talking trash throughout the game. Well,  the Patriots were not the ones who flapped their gums and talked reckess to the media guaranteeing victory. Moss and Brady were not the ones calling out the Steelers’ secondary.

Honestly, New England had every right to talk smack during the game. In fact, they earned the right to talk smack for the entire regular season. I don’t blame the Patriots for letting you guys have it-especially Smith. Like I said in my previous post about this game, the guarantee was a bad idea. It was a bad idea because that is fuel and motivation for your opponents.  The Patriots took it as a challenge and stepped up, while you guys faltered.

After the game, Anthony Smith had the nerve to blame the media for misquoting him. Smith said this to the AP: ‘If I had been quoted right, it wouldn’t have come out the way it did.”  Like Moss said, “It was said, documented, and printed” and you and your team payed for it!  Spare us the excusses, and the complaining becacuse it is cowardly and weak. Man up and and move on!

As far playing New England again, I hope it happens, so they can light up Smith again!
